Not much progress

I am pretty much at the same spot. Leveling has been slow since I am only playing once a week, and moving above level 20 is so slow. We have had some frustrating party's, and one that failed because I failed miserably in the process. IT is furstrating to have members leave because of a mistake but it happens I guess.
Maybe I will be lucky to reach level 30 in January.

Full Baron's Set

Fantone gave me the rest of the pieces to the Barons set. Can I say it is so much fun to wear something high quality and good for Mages!
The game has been moving slowly lately. I can't wait to get a job to level 30 and it feels like it is taking forever to get there.
Otherwise, I am crafting, harvesting, mining and trying to make lots, and lots of gil.
I have my base now at 100,000 gil, I try to earn 10 to 15,000 gil for every 5,000 I spend. Of course that has been bad this week, because of buying things for Tashubu, and getting my first gobbie bag expansion.

New Items recieved. :)

A ls member, Fantone, made me a Baron's Saio, talk about sweet. He had me harvest a bunch of stuff (red moko grass), and I sent him that and everything else he would need to make it. Now I have a piece of armor that my mage jobs can use so I don't have to have three different sets as I level up in the 20's. :) Cool isn't it.
I also found the pilgrims wand today. I have been wanting that now for a couple weeks and at last it is mine.
I am still trying to get the mist silk cape, I did catch spiny spipi, but it only dropped one silk thread. Bummer.

teleport successes.

This week I made it to level 17 with the blackmage job. It was hard. Last week my level did not budge, between a very slow party, and dying plenty solo, I thought I would never make it. Yesterday I did. So now I have warp. YES!
I also did the Qufim supply run, so now I can warp out there, and back to windy if needed. That makes life much easier until I can get the Kazahm keys.

Also last week, admidst the frustration of not leveling, I took a day off and leveled with Noelie and Cevout. He is working on his subjob so we all put on level one jobs and partied together. Talk about fun beating up all kinds of crazy stuff. I leveled monk to 6. So slowly I am getting different jobs leveled up. Watching Noelie play pld, makes me that it could be fun to play.

Warp scroll Quest

Today I managed to get the warp scroll Quest. IT seemed like it took me forever to get it! I did 14 total Bastok Quests to get my fame up to level 2. That included doing the quest Groceries 6 times. That was a lot of running around I tell you!

What have I been doing?

Lots, and thinking about this blog. I realized that to log every quest and mission completed would be a huge, and I mean huge undertaking. so I think I am going to stop that catalogue. I do know the my philosophy on the game is to have balance. To work on quests as much as possible to encourage the growth of fame, to earn gil, and get many items. To level smart, not so fast that I can't figure out what I am doing. Level jobs that work together to help in learning how to do jobs effectively. I think as a redmage that is a good plan. Since Redmage uses both white and black magic, it helps to have the two jobs leveling close together, it keeps me fresh. I am still somewhat frustrated with the whole power level thing, so I am trying to do my best to learn my job under gimped circumstances. All the complaining about people can be lead directly to this type of play, but everyone it seems to do it, either want power levels, or are being power levels. It would be okay if they would let a white mage and the tank continue to learn their jobs, but they do all the curing, and they don't want the tank to take the hate from the mob. It is frustrating, and the system is what is breaking the system of play. :)

Anyway, I have finished the quest the rumor, and have leveled blm to 15, last night I leveled whm to 19. My goal is to get these two jobs to 20, I think I would like to get whm to 25 so I can get raise, then I can start to feel of some use to others around me. :)
Then I can also start leveling rdm again.
I can say after finishing The Rumor, and getting drain, I really love that spell. It is soooooo cool. I don't know how some blm live without it. It is worth the effort of the quest. Easy enough if you can get someone to help you with it. I think the hardest thing with it is getting to Sandy, and getting your fame up. That was a pain in the neck, but most people seem to buy their fame, and really don't work the different quests that are available. I prefer to keep my hard earned gil and use it for crafting and buying armor as I need it.
That is what I have been doing. I have been lonely, I really don't have anyone to play with, so that gets boring from time to time. I enjoy that game, but the loneliness of not having a friend in game the same level is rather sad.

Update Cooking Skill :)

Yes I have been cooking again. I managed to work up to level 26 today, so I can go on to the profitable insect balls. (I hope)
So I figured I would write again, what I have done, this is from my sister, who skilled up this way.
Fire crystals are not as expensive as they used to be, from what I understand, still I tend to farm and keep all my crystals so it is not often I have to buy them. Usually just what I need to cap what I am working on. I also keep much of what I have for later skills, if possible. Also I farm when I can, I save all my crystals, shipping them to a mule. I only use them for other things when I have to. Maybe not so smart but I need to save my gil, and since the price of crystals have gone way down, I would rather keep them than try to sell them.

Here we go.
Level one
Before I knew what I was doing, I started with the cooking guides on FFXIcyclopedia.
Carrot Broth level 0-3
San d'Orian Carrot x4
Water Crystal

After just a bit of that my sister, sent me some lizard eggs, This helps if you know someone that can farm stuff for you to get going. So I stopped spending money on Carrots, and made some hard boiled eggs. The recipe is the same with bird eggs, which caps at level 6. You can get the distilled water at the restaurant there close to the cooking guild in Windhurst Waters. Keep the eggs and use them for level low skilled jobs, especially if you have mana access, since they increase both HP and MP. You can sell them, but they were slow sell for me. You might as well use them.

Hard boiled Eggs caps at 4

Lizard egg x1
Fire Crystal
Distilled waterx1

Bird eggx1 instead of Lizard Egg caps at 6

Then I did a bit of Herbal broth, I would not suggest doing it unless you have lots of water crystals. The ingredients can be bought at the guild.

Herbal Broth cap at7
Water Crystal
Beaugreens x2
frost Turnips x2.

What I did make the salmon sub sandwich for the test. The hardest thing with this is the running to get everything you need. In Windy that was a pain in the neck. :)

Salmon Sub Sandwich cap 8
Earth Crystal
Apple Vinegar
Black bread
Crying Mustard
La Theine Cabbage
Mithran Tomato
Smoked Salmon

Once I capped that and turned it in, I sold the rest, some on AH, some to guild. :)

Then too Orange Juice. This was kind of a pain to do because of the juices not stacking. Do this if you are a mage while you are out leveling and skill ups. Then you can use it while doing something else at the same time. The oranges you can get at a vendor near the gate at Windy Waters.

Orange Juice cap 10
Water crystal
Saruta oranges x4

Then I did sliced sardines to skill up.
This took some extra work, since I hate to pay for stuff if I can help it. So I fished and I lost money fishing because I listened to a different guide and lost the rig I bought when I had never fished. If you have not fished, go cheep at first to learn how to fish. It will save you some gil!
They sold okay at the AH.

Sliced Sardine cap 11
Wind Crystal
Bastore Sardine

Then I did roast mushrooms. Again I have to thank my sister for this, she farmed most of the mushrooms for me! Great to use if you have a whm job, or leveling whm. You can sell these at AH, moved slow for me, or use them yourself.

Roast Mushroom lvl 16 cap

Fire crystal
Sleepyshroom x2, or Danceshroomx2, or woozyshroomx2
rocksalt

Selbina Butter, most guides I read say sell them, but save yourself some time and grief, and keep them. If you plan on going far with cooking you will use the butter in the long run. Again my sister helped me out by farming the milk I needed and getting me the crystals because I did not have many. If you save them, you will most likely need a mule to store these puppies since you get 4 sticks off of one synth recipe. In the middle of doing this you will need to stop and make Pea soup for the test.

Selbina Butter cap level 20

Ice crystal
Rock salt
Selbina Milk

Pea Soup cap level 18

Fire Crystal
Blue peas x3
Distilled H20
dried Marjoram
wild onion

Baked Popoto was the next thing I did. I already had the butter, the popoto's you can buy from the same vendor as the oranges, and there you go. Again I farm fire crystals, not hard to do in Saratabuta. They don't sell back well but you don't loose lots either.

Baked Popoto lvl cap 22

Fire Crystal
popoto
Selbina Butter

After that I did the Meat Jerky. I had manged to get a subjob and ended up in Sandy to work on fame there for a subjob quest. I farmed for the meat, and I was able to make back some money off of this one. Not lots, but enough that it is not a money eater if you have the crystals and buy from vendors. This recipe makes 2, I did not have lots of breaks. If you start this before lvl 22 you will most likely need synthesis support. I have never used it because I like to work near my vendors or AH.

Meat Jerkey cap level 26

Ice Crystal
Dried Marjoram
Giant Sheep Meat
Rock salt

After this is insect paste balls, and the vegetable gruel for the test. I have started to grow some of the millioncorn in my moghouse. I would do more but the cost of grain seeds is rather high.

Insect paste level 29 cap
Earth Crystal
Distilled water
little worm
million corn

Vegetable gruel test item
Fire crystal
Batagreens or Beaugreens
chamomile
distiled Water
frost turnip
Rarab tail
tarutaru rice or San d' Orian Flour
(the or options make a lvl 26 item)

Party today, learning curve

I was in a pretty good party today. Except me, duh! For some reason, twice, I managed to target a leech instead of the party's target and doomed us all. Man I hate it when that happens. I try so hard to be sure I am targeting the parties target and boom something jumps in front of me and I hit it instead. grrrrrrrrrr. Not matter how hard I try. Learning curve I suppose.

Partying, not so fun

The past few days I have been trying to get the whm job up to 15 so I can head to Bastok and get the rest of the things going that I need for the quest to get drain! I don't mind playing white mage, but I really hate the pl system for these low level parties. I can't learn my job to have some one else do it for me. Then if I do manage to find a party without a powerlevel, they are pulling so many mobs that are so tough that I can't keep up with the cures and members die. Then the down time to wait for more members or healing is so dull. I have been so frustrated with the whole thing. I have no idea what to do. I have had lots of suggestions, but there really is not anything that works well for me to choose. So I am stuck in the dunes for another week. I wish I could play more on the evenings and weekends when the members of my ls is on. At least I would not be so bored.

long time in Sandy

I have spent the past several days, it feels like forever in San d'Oria. Can I say I hate that city. The music droans on and on with no relief. I am thankful for the forays outside the city to the wonderful pastoral music there.
Today I just managed to get my fame up to level 3, so now I can head to Selbina or somewhere to level up WHM then on to Bastok to work on a quest I started in Windy, then to Windy so I can keep working on that quest, and start the mission so I can get the quest to do the drain scroll so I can start leveling the BLM. So much to do?

Chocobo Trainer

I finished the quest for the Chocobo license yesterday and also managed to skill up to level 21. I got into one horrible party and one very good party so I was able to learn a bit of my job better. It is going slowly, and my sis keeps telling me that I am doing fine. Still I have this horrible feeling that if someone dies it is my fault. Perhaps I could have cured them faster. I seem to make so many mistakes but I guess that is part of what learning is all about. :)

Super Model

Okay, I finally finished the Quest a Pose by any other Name.
I activated it awhile ago, but because I was a redmage below level 8 and I did not want to buy a tunic at the time, I put it off until I could get one. Finished it today.
The biggest tip is to make sure you have the item with you that you will need to wear. It is different by job, so look it up to see. For mages you need the basic tunic. I also unequiped all weapons before I changed into the tunic.
You talk to Angelina, then wait and talk to her again, she will tell you what to wear and then change into it. If you change into it too fast, before the second conversation you deactivate the quest, and you have to start all over, by zoning.
Then wait a few seconds, change into the tunic, and talk to her again. Place the painting in your moghouse. I don't know what the key item is for, but I am sure it comes into play sometime.

Today's update, Peninsula and Mauhra

Today I attained level 20. With the help of the Empress band that is! I was beginning to think I was never going to get there. I got my cooking skills up to level 20, I made a separate run to Mauhra to by a Regen scroll, which I will need as soon as I hit level 21. I am also looking for gravity and enaero.
I was in a party of two today, and we managed a skill chain somehow. IT was amazing when I finally saw one at work, talk about cool!

I also finished Mission 2.2 A testing time yesterday. I did not have a chocobo license so I had to run to Taronghi canyon to kill the beasts. Even if you do have a chocobo license I would suggest getting a warp scroll and setting your home point in Windhurst Waters as suggested. First it gets you there very quickly so you have more time to kill enemies. In this quest the more the merrier. Just go after easy prey or lower, nothing else. The idea here is speed. I did not use my spells much, just to cure or add enspells to my weapon. That seemed to help. I also did way too much running around. If you could have somone tele you to the crag of Mea, that can also help. If you are a lower level, it might be wise to go with a power level so you are safe, and can keep you healed in the mission. I think that would work really well in the long run. When you are done, warp back to home point with your scroll or by benefit of a friendly BLM and you are done. Very easy, nothing to this quest, just be sure where you are going first.

So here is the cooking recipe to go from level 20 to 22
1 Fire crystal
1 popoto
1 selbina butter

I only broke 4 crystals out of about 34 crystals, and lost 2 butter and 2 popoto.
pretty good return, with only having to buy the popoto's, I saved the butter from previous synthesis, and had plenty of crystals from farming.

Current levels are
20 Redmage 10 Blackmage
Dagger 25
Staff 18
Shield 37
Sword 55
Club 21
Archery 8
Evasion 51
Parrying 18

Magic
Enhancing 26
Elemental 47
Healing 17
Enfeebling 58
Dark 19

Chocobilious Completed

Okay, so I did this easy quest today. I actually tried it the hard way because I am still trying to level my RDM and I figure this is a good way to get a few points. I could have kicked myself because I was out there yesterday, and I had a sprig of Papaka grass but had to get rid of it to keep a couple of other items I needed. Do you think I can get one, off of any Dhalmel I killed. Not for the life of me. It did not help that everytime I was healing someone would come along and knock off one of my targets. GRRRR! So when poltergiests finally got me, after I was attacked by a Goblin Tinker, I was a goner and went back to my homepoint. I headed to the auction house, bought a sprig of papaka grass and finished the quest.

Mission and quest completed

I finished the mission "Lost for Words", and the quest "The Amazing Scorpian, thanks to the help of Bones for my linkshell. I never would have made it through the Shakarami maze alive. In fact I did die, but that was when he had to check the map. When he came back, I was a goner. :) In retrospect I should have had taken the prism powder and I probably would have been okay for that couple of minutes or so. :)
He was amazed at how much Hate I pull from Goblins, I am saying, yeah, they love me. I am sure it is because I am just a little weak adventurer always trying to go to places just that much too tough for me. ha, ha.

So it was exciting, took a bit longer than normal but life is good.

Now I have to study what to do next. Since my husband is home for a couple of days with the long weekend, no more play time other than to do gardening in my mog house.

Macros settings

Okay I have done a couple (more than that actually) macros settings.

Here are the first two
/ma "Cure"
/equip ring1 "Tranquility Ring"
/equip ring2 "Tranquility Ring"

/ma "Dia"
/equip ring1 "Tranquility Ring"
/equip ring2 "Tranquility Ring"
/wait 6
/ma "Paralyze"

/ma "Bind"
/equip ring1 "Eremite's Ring"
/equip ring2 "Eremite's Ring"
/wait 6
/ma "Poison"

/ma "Stone"
/equip ring1 "Eremite's Ring"
/equip ring2 "Eremite's Ring"
/wait 6
/ma "Aero"

That is just a few I have set up. I am trying to keep any combined spells of the same type of magic to minimize the equipment change. I am sure I should just have them one spell at a time, but the enfeebles I am trying to keep together more. Since Red Mage is good with Enfeebles they are my most important, and I am trying to read up on which ones are used the most. I am sure I should sit down and make a party set, and a solo set. Some people use White magic spells, enfeebling on one palet, and Nuking spells on another one too. I am not sure I am so good a scrolling through my macros, since I have trouble with the cure macros working in party fights even. If someone can tell me how to target when engaged with the enemy let me know. The best I could come up with is I need to not be fighting but standing farther back.

Just a small update

Not much has changed other than leveling my subjobs and I will start to work on some more quests tonight.
I have also been trying to do lots of reading on the red mage job. I am also still very, very interested in leveling my mule to a good white mage. I think that could be fun, but in time. I still want to get much of what I am doing figured out. Which means lots, and lots, and lots of reading.
Today I have learned,
Good Food for Red mage
1 Sweet Rice Cakes
2. Pies
3. Crimson jelly
And snacks and juices.
5 Rice Dumpling

Learning more about macros settings and how to put equipment changes with the spells being cast. When I get some written that work, I will post them here. I will always take suggestions on using macros effectively.

Subjob advancement and Steelfleece Baldarich

Playing Thursday night I managed to complete the Subjob quest. I got into a party made of all Melee experts with a Pl, I was the only mage in the party. I often felt rather useless as I watched the guys fight while I was trying to heal, and then be out of commission because I was poisoned. I really, really hated not having a white mage that could cure me from that. Still in just a short amount of time, I moved from level 16 to 18. Most of the attacks were bringing in 200 + experience points.
After the party disbanded, Raji, Bones, Melpomne, and Amberly came to help me finish my subjob quest. One our way Bones somehow managed to agro a big, and I mean a big beast called a
Steelfleece Baldarich.
It was huge! I am sure the four of them could have taken the thing on, but since they were with two of us low level people they were afraid it could have killed the two of us, and we would have had to relevel back to 18.
Bones managed to get us transported out of there and then safely back to get the item we needed to get our subjob. (We had picked up another player that needed help completing the quest as well.)
Needless to say it provided some rather entertaining game play.

frustration abounds

yes I am frustrated. I had a whm yelling at me last night, I could not ever seem to keep member parties healed, and just like a completely dumb rdm. Maybe I am trying to learn so fast, all I want to do is do this job well, and right. I have found another good site though! Much better than some others I have looked at. Gives me more hope.

Red Mage Party? I don't think I like it!

I was in a Party last night that had 4 red mages, 1 black mage, 1 warrior, in the end we ended up with 3 red mages and the 1 black mage. The first group had a blm that thought he could take a goblin on his own if the rest of us just kept curing her and protecting her. Duh! Not! I had seen a goblin take nearly and entire party and this one killed me when she decided to abandon the party. We may be redmages, but we all only have so much MP and we would run out of that by the time she thought she could get that goblin down.

We filled the spot with a very good redmage, but we were so out of balance, I found I would be casting the same spells. At one point I was trying to cure the party, but the lag on the computer was so bad that I could not seem to manage curing and we lost a party member in the battle. That was very frustrating. I could not get my macros to work correctly again, and with the lag, I could not target and check party members fast enough. grrrr. I hope I get better at this soon. I did make it to level 16 but lost my signet shortly there after. So perhaps today I can take the time to get Sofiana back to Bastok, then next week back to the dunes.

More updates

So I have spent the past few days in Bastok, selling things, and making lots and lots of Butter. I am saving it up to be able to make pie dough down the road. I filled up Silverangels safe so much I had to start a new mule just have a place to do more things. Her name is Kendwawendwa, and is a little Taru. So I shipped stuff to her, and she is also auctioning off stuff, and will be the place to store my excess weapons and armor, that the kids and I can use.

I still like Noelie's method of cooking, there are so many different guides out there, but her method for me makes the most sense.
I told her she should write it up. Many people seem to want to just do it to make money, but they still are not smart. Come on, sell the Butter you made, to just have to buy or make more when it comes time to make pies!

Butter Recipe
Ice Crystal x1
Selbina milk x1
Rock salt x1

makes 4 sticks of butter, HQ will eventually make more.

Today, Squirre helped me get the key items to be able to transport to different areas. Talk about nice of him. I want help, but I also want to learn, so I am unsure how much help to ask for when I am learning.

3rd Party

Okay so I get into a new party yesterday, the first without a pl, which is good in learning your job, but tough in the fact that our poor Tank could not take the damage, and our whm could not keep up, and I could not manage to help her out much. It makes me frustrated that I am so slow but I am coming up with ideas to help. I have to do some more research on macros settings and see if I can get better at reacting quickly when I am stumbling through my macros and how to get it to work.

On a kind note, members of my linkshell have been helping me out. Now they are going to craft me some items. I can not get over the kindness that some people have for a new person like me. Not just in taking time to help me level, return to base safely, and now this. If they are like this in game, it tells me what they are like in life.

2nd party

I managed to get into a second party last night. It was not quite as efficient as the first one I was in, but much better as far as picking the fight.
We had a summoner in the group so that was very fun to watch.
I was KO on my way to meet the party, so I lost the lvl I had obtained, I did get it back. I was not able to level to 15, but Fantone, and Bones from the linkshell I am in, came to help me a bit after. Michael came home shortly there after so I had to stop playing.
I will try again tonight. Hopefully I will get some done before I lose my signet.

1st party experience

My sister Noelie got me to the dunes to join a party. Needless to say it was very interesting, but I learned a couple of things that I hope to help other red mages in the future.
1. In a party setting, use Dia over Bio.
2. Try not to use the elemental spells, they are ineffective. At least on crabs. :)

Watch what the puller is doing, if he grabs too tough of a mob, you may have to back off to help cure the white mage in the group.

Try your best to get your macro settings to work. That for me was the hardest thing to do. For some reason I could not scroll between my different party members to use the cure spell. Something I have to practice more some how.

Tuesday, July 31, 2007

Here is a list of what cooking recipes I started with thanks to Noelie's help. (She sent me lots of eggs)

Hard Boiled Eggs
Fire Crystal
1x Lizzard eggs
1x distilled H2o. You can find cheap H2o at the restaurant in Windhurst Waters close to the cooking guild.

Once you advance your cooking level close to 4, you can start to use bird eggs to make these to get to level 6.

Then to orange juice,
Water crystal
4x saruta oranges. You can buy these cheaply at a merchant standing near the gate in Waters.
Orange juice does not stack, so I have tried selling them, giving them to mages, and using them as I have been out working on quests and missions. When you get to level 8 you can make the Salmon Sub to pass the guild test, then continue with the orange juice to level 10.

Salmon Sub
earth crystal
1x crying mustard
1x apple vinegar
1x black bread
1x La theine Cabbage
1x smoked salmon
1x Mithran tomato

After level 10

Slice of sardines. I joined the fishing guild, bought a cheap pole and some bait. One of the tips at another place said to buy and expensive kit, I did that, and lost it on my first try fishing. If you have not fished before buy inexpensive bait and practice. I was able to catch all my fish to level this off, and also harvest wind crystals off of bees, and bats. If you are too high a level to get good points, just work on a job that is low level to do this. I was able to do this without buying anything but the pole and bait. If you are in Windurst you can catch the bastore sardines right of the dock there by the fishing guild. Then go sell your food as bait at the action house.

wind crystal
bastore sardine x1

Next I started to do roasted mushrooms, this can be easily done if someone is willing to harvest the mushrooms for you. They are rather expensive to buy. I also lost lots of crystals until I hit level 13, so you might want to level something else first. Once I started to not loose so much I was able to stack and sell these at the auction house.

fire crystal
What ever mushroom x2.
(sleepshroom, danceshroom, woozyshroom.)

Next I think I can try to catch some moat carp, and try that before I go to butter.

That is about all I have for today.

Just starting

I wanted to start a journal detailing my journey through Final Fantasy XI. At this point, I am not so sure how I am going to do it but here it goes.
My sister has tried for years to get me to play Final Fantasy. Much of the delay has been that I did not have a good computer or good internet connections. Now that I have both I have started to play thanks to her buying me the game!

My main character is Sofiana, named after a powerful Deryni, in Katherine Kurtz's deryni books. She is a Mithra (a cat like race), and I am training her as a Red Mage. For someone not familar with Final Fantasy I am sure that is confusing, but if you are starting or a seasoned player you know exactly what it is.

I am in the world Leviathan. The servers for FFXI are given names to distinguish and keep them from being too busy and overloaded.
In the world I started in Windhurst. It is a very large city. I am working on cooking skills and leveling up my job and weapon skills as well.
as I blog along, I will post tips for beginners as I am finding many of the sites are not beginner friendly. I don't know that I can be any help to anyone in the game. We shall see as I go along.
